The electric folding cabriolet roof on the Peugeot 307cc is a high quality system supplied by the same supplier of such systems to Mercedes and Porsche, so you can be assured of a reliable and robust system.
However, the system is also complex, with many parts, and so the aim of this page is to provide some clarity on what components make up this system, where they are located, and some information on some common issues to look out for when diagnosing problems with your folding roof system.
Cabriolet Roof Components
1. Hydraulic Pump
This unit provides hydraulic pressure to the various hydraulic rams in the system via a feed and return tube to each ram. It is located in the rear of the boot underneath the plastic trim that surrounds the spare wheel. To the right at the rear is a sealed soundproofed box containing the pump assembly.
2. Roof ECU
In conjunction with the BSI, the roof ECU controls the hydraulic pump, system logic and user feedback. It is located in the rear of the boot, under the same plastic panel as the pump but towards the left at the rear.
3. 2 x Front Roof Locks
Located under the headlining at the front of the moving section of the roof. Both locks are operated by a single hydraulic ram.
4. 2 x Quarter Section Locks
Located in the quarter section of the folding roof and operated each side by a cable connected to the front roof locks.
5. 2 x Boot Locks
Located each side of the boot about half way towards the front of the boot. These are operated by cables attached to the bottom of the boot opening rams each side.
6. 5 x Hydraulic Rams
Each hydraulic ram has a feed and return pipe to carry fluid to and from the pump. One is located under the headlining of the moving section and is use to operate the roof locks. Two rams are used each side for the roof movement and located going from the side of the boot through into the cabin area, underneath tha plastic trim. A further two hydraulic rams and located in the rear corners of the boot and are used to open and close the boot.
7. Folding Parcel Shelf
The rear parcel shelf folds as the roof is operated, with only half deployed in the coupe position, but a lock, driven by a cable, causes an additional section to also be deployed in the cabriolet position.
8. 2 x Extendable Flaps + Motor
Located in each forward corner of the boot lid are extendable flaps that deploy to fill in the gaps left by the roof quarter sections when in the cabriolet configuration. The are driven by a worm drive motor and cables that run to the motor located underneath the rear boot plastic sill. This is the plastic covering the boot lock jam, not the spare wheel plastic as mentioned above.
9. 12 x Micro-switches / Contactors
The roof contains a multitude of switches throughout the system to provide progress feedback to the roof ECU. They indicate when a stage is in operation or completed and signal the ECU to progress with the roof operation.
- In the front left windscreen pillar is a switch that indicates the roof is fully closed. It is operated by the plastic rod that extends from the front of the roof section and into holes in the tops of the windscreen pillars.
- Each roof lock in the front of the folding roof section has its own switch to indicate a locked and unlocked condition.
- A roof open switch is driven by the roof ram located in the forward upper edge of the boot on the right hand side.
- Each boot lock on each side of the boot contains a switch to indicate its locked or unlocked condition.
- Each extendable flap contains two switches, one to indicate it is fully extended and another to indicate it is fully retracted.
- A switch located in the rear right of the boot indicates when the boot is fully open.
- A switch located in the left side luggage screen receptacle indicates that the luggage screen has been pulled over correctly.
Cabriolet Roof Service / Coach Position
Access may be gained to many of the powered roof components by placing the roof in the service position. Operate the roof until the position shown in the picture below is obtained and then remove the key.
More components may be accessed by placing the roof in the Coach position. This procedure requires two people.
1. Open the boot and operate the boot lock with a screwdriver.
2. Gently close boot lid and ask second person to hold it in place gently.
3. Operate the roof while the second person holds the boot lid in a horizontal position.
4. Stop operating the roof when it reaches the position shown above and remove key.
5. Remember to unlock the boot and close it properly after closing the roof.
Common Powered Roof Issues
Low hydraulic fluid levels or contaminated fluid can cause issues. Check the fluid levels are within range of the marks on the hydraulic pump. Top up with Mineral LHF using a syringe.
Fluid leaks will cause operation failures. The seals on the hydraulic rams is the first place to look for leaks.
The fixing screws for the front roof locks can work loose and cause lock/unlock errors. Set the roof in the service position and remove the headlining to access the screws.
The cable that drives the boot side locks can become displaced from the bottom of the boot opening ram, especially if the emergency unlock cord has been used yo manually close the roof. If one side of the boot appears to remain locked check this cable.
If the roof fails to progress after opening the boot, ensure each window is fully lowered in turn manually using individual window controls.
The roof is a self bleeding system and will expel air during operation, however the pump contains heat protection circuitry that will shut down the pump to prevent damage. Always allow the pump to cool for a few minutes after two consecutive operations of the roof.
